Episode 03: “Synchro”
SUMMARY: Picking up from the previous events, Kuro took Keita home after collapsing from the fight with Seiji. Keita is still alive, thanks to Kuro’s mojo. She reveals that she formed a contract and swapped hearts with him, noting it’s a good thing that they are compatible in this regard. She explains that Keita shouldn’t stray too far from her since the heart will become necrotic. Keita can’t seem to grasp the swapped hearts thing, so Kuro shows her chest scar. Akane then unexpectedly walks in on them in this odd situation. Meanwhile, Excel, the blonde(?) chick who arrived in Tokyo last episode, notes that she can sense an unusual amount of tera everywhere and wonders where it’s coming from and who’s behind it. They suspect master roots being mass produced. Must investigate.
Kuro explains the contract to Akane. According to Kuro, a contract formed by exchanging body parts (heart in Keita’s case) between a human and a mototsumitama. By rule, should only form a contract with a chosen human, but she made an exception because the circumstance was she had to save Keita’s life. Furthermore, if both participants in the contract “synchro,” they will be able to activate incredible power. She explains that she is a mototsumitama. They live in another world and they are stronger and more durable than humans. She adds that Keita doesn’t need to repay her saving his life because she was the cause of his death anyway. Keita tries to push Kuro away again. Akane is confused with all this talk of unusual things. Meanwhile, a blonde guy named Hiyou reports that Seiji was defeated. Hiyou seems to know Kuro. He is also part of Tribal Ends. Back at home, Keita gets a call from his teacher, who’s wondering if Keita was involved in some sort of fight that happened in the neighborhood the previous night. Keita denies.
Kuro tells Keita that since they just formed a contract, her combat abilities are not in good shape. They both need to work on “synchro” or her abilities will drop. They go shopping with Akane to buy some clothes for Kuro. Keita is still bummed about what happened. Akane keeps getting wrong impression of Kuro and Keita’s relationship. As the train passes by the vicinity where Excel’s car is driving through, Excel senses a mototsumitama tera. The next day, Keita leaves for school and asks Kuro to stay at home. Kuro expresses her worry since he’d be far and they just formed a contract. We then learn from Hiyou that suspicious glasses guy is responsible for the production of master roots and someone who has a higher position, named Reishin, is involved.
Keita’s house is found by the Hiyou’s thugs. They easily defeat Kuro because her power is low. Apparently, when she gets punched Keita feels some pain too. Kuro manages to escape and has Punipuni follow Keita’s scent, which leads them to school. Keita is talking with his teacher, who seems to know more about doppeliners than he lets on. He says that Keita must do something good for the society. Kuro finds Keita and recognizes the teacher as a Tribal Ends member. Kuro and teacher get into a fight, where she is really beaten up by teacher. Kuro is still weak even if Keita is in the same room. She tells Keita that their heart must be one in order to synchro, as in they both must have the will and the heart to want to defeat the enemy. Teacher mentions Risa, that even though she was a useless person at least she died for society. Apparently, he was leaking information about his students, so that they’d deliberately bump into their doppeliners. This pisses off Keita, who asks Kuro to defeat teacher. This emotion allows them to finally activate synchro, which brings Kuro a much stronger power.
Kuro defeats teacher with just 2 punches. They then run away. Keita realizes that he can no longer return and it seems fighting is the only way to survive now. Meanwhile, suspicious glasses guy is looking at Akane’s photos again.

THEY SAID WHAT? As usual, here’s another quick reference for the terms used in this episode: Tera Guardian or Mototsumitama – God-like beings charged with maintaining the balance of existence. However, they can become corrupt which result in conflicts between them. Tera – Spiritual life force that inhabits all life-forms. Mototsumitama usually form contracts with humans with high amounts of tera because it enables them to use exceed more often. Tribal Ends – humans who have been given Tera Guardian powers by Tera Guardians. Synchro – The greatest initiation of a contract, usually when both partners have a shared will. When synchro is reached, a Tera Guardian’s power multiplies. However synchro is really strenuous on the human partner because the human shares all injuries the Tera Guardian receives. Contract – A pact or a bond made between a human and a Mototsumitama through sharing body parts. (*terms from wiki)
IMPRESSION: Maybe it’s just me, but I find Kuro a bit annoying when she’s trying to be cute. It just doesn’t work. It’s more silly than cute. Please stop. I like her better when she in normal mode or kicka$$ mode. Okay, that aside, I knew it! That teacher was fishy! The moment Keita’s teacher gave him a call, it was quite clear to me that he would have some role in the whole doppeliner thing. Not a big role, but we get some action, thanks to his being a Tribal End. We learn that the mojo that Kuro did in episode 2 to save Keita was actually exchanging hearts with him. I initially thought she was just swapping a ball of glowing lifeforce. Heh.
Anyway, when Keita said he can no longer return… did he mean school? But I think he might’ve meant he can’t return to his usual life anymore, now that he’s been dragged into Kuro’s world. I’m not sure. I wonder if he’s going to become some sort of fugitive because he’s involved in a teacher’s demise. It doesn’t look like Excel is an evil character. I wonder if she knows Kuro. Maybe they’d join forces against the bad guys! It seems that Kuro’s brother is involved with the mass production of master roots. I think we’ll meet him soon. It’s also obvious that Akane would have a bigger role in this mess since glasses guy seems to be stalking her or something. Oh, and btw, the synchro process was SO mahou shoujo! ~Lol. It seemed a little out of place (along with Kuro’s trying-to-be-cute face).
