Episode 02: “Pact”
BRIEF SUMMARY: Batter guy from previous episode is being tortured (and eventually killed) by his boss Seiji, who is part of Tribal Ends from the Shishigami clan, for failing to catch Kuro. Meanwhile, It’s little Mayu’s funeral. Keita ponders if what Kuro said about doppeliners are true since Mayu and Risa both died after seeing people who looked like them, same as what happened to his mom.
Suspicious guy with glasses giving cryptic smiles from the previous episode is attending a business meeting about K-ON mart. Thugs are looking for Kuro as per Seiji’s orders. Punipuni nose leads Kuro to Keita’s house. Keita is surprised to see Kuro at his place, turns out Akane let her in since Kuro told her that Keita treated her to a ramen and thought they were friends. Keita goes all gloomy about the incidents and kicks out Kuro from his house, saying he doesn’t want to get involved with the situation she is in. Kuro apologizes and leaves. Keita tells Akane she can go home too since he already ate out. Keita feels guilty for kicking out Kuro and goes around the neighborhood searching for her with some food at hand. Seiji and his thugs are still hunting for Kuro. Keita finds Kuro and asks about doppeliners, roots, and mototsumitamas.
According to Kuro, a mototsumitama exists to control the balance oof coexistence. All beings in the world receive an equal amount of “tera,” but due to fate, a person’s soul is divided into 3. The total tera equals 100, unequally divided 50, 30 and 20 between the three look-alikes. The doppeliners with the lower tera will be eliminated by the one who possesses more tera in the point system, and absorbs their tera. As a result the one with the highest tera lives. Kuro says Keita has a doppeliner too, only he hasn’t met him yet. Meanwhile, suspicious guy with glasses notes how interesting the doppeliner system is in that only one with good luck can attain happiness and may have the ability to change the world. He then notes that he’s lucky as he looks at a picture of Akane. Thugs finally find Kuro (who’s with Keita), fight ensues. Kuro defeats the henchmen, but gets quite beaten up by Seiji. It turns out that he is able to do a technique (Exceed) that he acquired by killing motosumitamas. Bloody fight between Kuro and Seiji continues, Kuro still can’t manage to get the upper hand. Keita tries to call the cops for help. Seiji tells him off and told him he should’ve just run away, then kills Keita. Kuro gets mad. Manages to disable Seiji for a bit and takes Keita’s body as she escapes. She revives Keita by exchanging life force thingies with him (looks like she’s giving him some her life force?) As a result, both Kuro and Keita gets branded by a tattoo on their hands, signifying a contract between them for saving Keita’s life.
Seiji finds them and still beats up Kuro. Kuro finally gets an idea how to defeat Seiji by electrocuting him. Apparently, Keita got some powers from Kuro too and lends her some of it. He collapses after. Two people arrive in Tokyo, noting that there’s an abnormal amount of tera gathering there, like someone is twisting the flow of doppeliners in Tokyo on purpose. They conclude that the balance for coexistence is disrupted and needs to be fixed.
~ end of episode
THEY SAID WHAT? No, Tribal Ends is not a band name. Here’s another list of terms within this episode for quick reference: Tera Guardian or Mototsumitama – God-like beings charged with maintaining the balance of existence. However, they can become corrupt which result in conflicts between them. Tera – Spiritual life force that inhabits all life-forms. Mototsumitama usually form contracts with humans with high amounts of tera because it enables them to use exceed more often. Tribal Ends – Humans who have been given Tera Guardian powers by Tera Guardians. Synchro – The greatest initiation of a contract, usually when both partners have a shared will. When synchro is reached, a Tera Guardian’s power multiplies. However synchro is really strenuous on the human partner because the human shares all injuries the Tera Guardiana receives. Exceed– Abilities used in fighting by the Tera Guardian once synchro has been initiated. Each Tera Guardian has a unique Exceed, and some may be dangerous to the human partner, due to the high use of tera. Contract – A pact or a bond made between a human and a Mototsumitama through sharing body parts. (*terms from wiki)
IMPRESSION: Um, okay. I’m a bit confused about the contract part. Based on wiki, it’s a bond made by sharing limbs? So that’s why the tattoo thingies are in their hands? I thought it was a ball of lifeforce or something. Oh, well. I guess we’ll learn more about it in the next episode since the contract wasn’t explained much at all. The suspicious guy with glasses looks like he’s got something to do with the disrupted flow of tera in Tokyo. I wonder what his deal is, and could he be Kuro’s brother?
Kuro saving Keita’s life and the doppeliner system somewhat reminded me of Shakugan no Shana, but I’ve never really watched that series (only the movie version), so my comparison/observation is limited to that. Moving on, it looks like Akane will have her own encounter with her doppeliner soon since glasses guy is looking at her picture while Risa’s and Mayu’s are on his desk. I wonder if Kuro saving Keita’s life will have any effect on the doppeliner system? Or probably not, because Keita is supposed to die only after he meets his look-alike? I wonder… If one of the doppeliners dies from other causes before running into their look-alikes, what happens to their tera? Do those with higher tera get it anyway? Hmm. Anyway, I suspect the two people who arrived in Tokyo are mototsumitamas too. They don’t look evil, but hey, I totally could be wrong since I’m merely guessing here with all this stuff.
