Episode 09: “A miraculous confession of love, a shocking accident”
BRIEF SUMMARY: Takemoto is still on his journey. Still not sure what he’s looking for but feels he has some vague idea about it now. Hagu is painting again. Morita needs to finish his graduation piece. Yamada and Morita gets into another serious conversation. She says she wants to completely let go of her feelings for Mayama but if she falls in love with someone else, she’d feel like the love she has been feeling up until now were all lies. “I’ll be afraid. I’m afraid to face how stubborn I was about love in the past. It’s frustrating. It’s painful. Everything would be like a dream.”
Meanwhile, the annoying professor who’s been bugging Hagu talks to Shuuji, wondering why he’s letting Hagu go her own way. He replies that Hagu has her own way of improving herself and her goals, then encourages the professor to see the painting she has been doing lately. Mayama and Rika visits Fujiwara to wrap up their joint project. Yamada arrives to deliver her potteries and inadvertently sees them together, attempts to engage in small talk with Mayama to relieve the odd atmosphere. Nomiya then arrives and tries break the tension. Yamada tries to act indifferent but stares after Mayama as he leaves. Noticing this, Nomiya grabs a marker and takes a quick chance to write the word “idiot” on Yamada’s left hand. Yamada is not happy with this, but Nomiya says she managed to stop thinking about Mayama for a split second there because she got mad at Nomiya. Nomiya says that when she thinks of Mayama, she can look at the her hand and think about being mad at him instead. Annoyed, Yamada walks out, saying that it makes her feel better seeing Mayama happy now because if she sees him unhappy, she might become indecisive again about not liking him anymore. Later, Miwako informs Nomiya that since Mayama left, they have to send someone else to Tottori for a year and he’s the most likely person to go.Hagu apologizes to Shuuji. He answers that paintings were never for the purpose of others and that he likes her new creations.
Rika is in emo mode while staring at the painting on her desk, remembering Harada telling her that he’d like to take her to the place in that painting someday. Takemoto arrives at the end of his journey and goes back to Tokyo, noting that he was able to continue and finish his journey because there are people that are waiting for him and a place where he wishes to return to. Takemoto finally reaches Tokyo. He drops by Shuuji’s place and sees Hagu painting there. He gets the courage to finally let Hagu know that he likes her. He notes to himself that knew he didn’t need to ask to know what Hagu’s answer would be, that’s why he’s already satisfied to have been able to say it. Hagu was a bit taken aback to suddenly hear this but manages to say “thank you” with a smile and welcomes him home, to which he replies with a warm smile “I’m home.” Meanwhile, Mayama receives a fax from Spain and finds out that Rika is planning to go there by herself. He’s angry that she didn’t tell him about this before. Rika says she’s planning to do the project alone since it was the last competition she entered with Harada. She thanks Mayama for all his help and notes that she was able to continue Harada’s work with Mayama’s assistance. She says she felt like she had no reason to live if she stopped working on the projects that Harada has left undone. The next day, Takemoto informs Hagu that he was able to move forward on his journey while remembering her encouraging words while she reveals that she received a lot of courage from the message written on the postcard he sent her and she realized that painting was the only thing for her. Later, Takemoto starts doing some self-study work by reading carving and shrine restoration books and practicing his carving skills.
Yamada arrives at Fujiwara to deliver her potteries and looks for Nomiya. She learns from Miwako that he’s a bit busy these days since he’s getting ready to move to Tottori soon. This news completely surprises Yamada, Miwako realizes Nomiya hasn’t told her about it yet. Nomiya arrives a little later at Fujiwara and says he’ll deliver the potteries to the clients, so he’ll give Yamada a lift to school. As Yamada gets off the car and starts to walk away, she decides to ask Nomiya why he didn’t tell her that he was moving to Tottori for a year to do a project. Nomiya says he wasn’t trying to hid it from her, he just didn’t think that it was necessary to tell her. “Even if we’re working together? Don’t you think it’s horrible that you didn;t even tell me that?” she asks. Nomiya insists he just didn’t want to tell her, she keeps asking why. Nomiya finally blurts out, “Because I like you.” then drives away, leaving Yamada standing there at a loss for words.
Meanwhile, the annoying female professor apologizes to Hagu and recognizes her ability after seeing her latest paintings, explaining why she had been pushing her and realizing her mistake. Rika and Mayama are about to board a train home. He notices Rika staring at the train headed to Sapporo (I suppose that’s where Otaru is?) A sthe train is about to leave, he impulsively grabs Rika’s hand and boards the train to Sapporo/Otaru instead, taking Rika by surprise. Back in school Hagu is running around campus and gets into an unfortunate accident involving a huge piece of glass smashing down the ground with the broken pieces injuring her head and her hand badly.

IMPRESSION: Nomiya writing “idiot” on Yamada’s hand then telling her that she can look at that and be mad at him so she can avoid thinking of Mayama, that was sweet! Alas, the Tottori scene I’ve been waiting for. It’s the best Nomiya x Ayumi scene/episode (at least I think so, LOL). Guess what? What happened to my Tottori scene?! >_< Ugh. Sadly, the Tottori scene I was looking forward to didn’t go as well as I hoped it to. They took out a big chunk out of it (they took out the best parts! *sigh*). It would’ve been so much better if they stuck with the train scene from the anime, that was so much sweeter than Nomiya driving away in the car here. I guess I was expecting too much. They better make up for this! LOL. Anyway, no point crying over spilled milk. I hope to see more of Nomiya x Yamada in the next few episodes, although it seems episode 10 will be more of a Hagu-centric one.
Moving on, with Takemoto reaching the end of his journey, I was initially confused with the rain and the sun, but then realized that it wsa probably representative of his feelings instead of being the weather itself (I guess). I’m not a big fan of Mayama x Rika so I didn’t really care much about their train boarding part. Obviously, we’ll be seeing more of that in episode 10 along with Hagu’s accident.
