Episode 06: “How can you become an adult”
BRIEF SUMMARY: Morita is back. Takemoto goes job hunting. He attends several interviews, feeling insecure about everything. Miwako is at the hospital because she strained her back. She forbids Mayama to tell anyone about her injury, to which he agrees… but later we see him telling Nomiya about it over the phone (LOL). So Nomiya takes over Miwako’s projects in the meantime. He calls Yamada and informs her about it.
Takemoto continues his job hunting. Hagu loves art and wants to focus on it. Rika visits Miwako. She almost bumps into Mayama leaving the hospital but manages to keep her distance. Miwako notes Rika has been alone since Mayama left, saying she shouldn’t shut herself away and should learn how to depend on others a bit. On her way home, Rika bumps into the doctor who treated her burn previously. He says he wondered what happened to her when she didn’t come back for a follow up. He offers that they can still fix up Rika’s scar, which she declines, saying that it’s fine the way it is.
Hagu has some sort of press conference regarding her winning piece in a competition (where Morita took 2nd place). She mentions that she’d like to paint in the countryside. Morita watches on. His art agent tells him that he needs to get his act together since an artist who does not win is nobody. Takemoto is still unsuccessful at finding a job. Shuuji reminds him of his friend who’s looking for an employee, asking Takemoto if he’d like to try it out and go for an interview. He later decides to go for that interview and manages to impress Shuuji’s friend and is offered a job. He wonders if he should take the offer. Mayama says it’s amazing that someone needs Takemoto and that it is not simple to be needed by someone else. After much contemplation, Takemoto decides to accept the job offer. Morita inquires about Rika and if Mayama had seen her lately. Mayama says he wants to but would rather wait until he’s sure of himself that he can be the sort of person that Rika needs.
Nomiya calls Yamada, asking her how the pottery job is going to which she replies it’s going well and that she’ll meet the deadline. Nomiya smiles and asks Mayama to buy Yamada something nice to eat since she’s working hard. Meanwhile, Hagu looks at Morita’s sculpture which he says lost to Hagu’s piece. She notes that it’s her favorite among his creations and that when she saw it, she thinks she lost and that she was disappointed just looking at it so she painted more. Rika stops by Shuuji’s place. She wonders why we forget and is disappointed to think that she will one day forget about Harada as time passes by.
Mayama delivers the food for Yamada but she isn’t at the pottery studio. He leaves a note for her and inadvertently leaves his coat too. On his way out of campus, he notices Rika leaving via a taxi and tries to run after it in vain. He is determined to do his best and work hard to be capable enough to be by Rika’s side. He later visits Miwako again at the hospital, wondering what he must do to be good enough for someone (obviously Rika), crying his frustration away. Meanwhile, Yamada finds Mayama’s note and notices the coat he left, which she wears fondly. Nomiya drops by unexpectedly and notices that she made 100 pieces of the pottery order instead of 8, surprising Yamada. She mistook hakko (8.) for hyakko (100). Nomiya is amused by this and invites her out to a soba place to eat. Unsure what to do and still wearing Mayama’s coat, she obliges. She falls asleep in the car then later finds out that the soba place was actually in Nagano; however, it was worth it since it was really delicious. Nomiya later drives her home. She thanks him for the meal, he replies by thanking her for the extra pottery pieces (LOL). He reminds her again to teach him ceramics sometime, to which she replies with a smile that she teaches strictly. He says he’ll be prepared then. As she walks away, Nomiya calls out and asks if he should return the coat she’s wearing back to Mayama, taking her by surprise that he noticed. “Does it have to be him?” he asks
.
Morita asks Shouda-sensei if you could fall in love with someone just by mere talent that he/she possesses. He answers that he thinks so. Takemoto goes off for his 1st day at work. Much to Takemoto’s dismay, he is informed that, unfortunately, he can no longer be hired since one of the biggest clients went bankrupt and the profit the company was supposed to have didn’t come. Hagu turns down another invitation to join a competition but the lady teacher is still bugging her and tells her off for turning it down. Adding another blow to Takemoto’s string of bad luck, Morita tells him that he realized he does like Hagu too.

IMPRESSION: I was a little surprised to see that a group of interviewees are lined up in front of a panel for a job interview… Is that how it usually goes in Japan? I guess it was quite new to me since the job interviews I heard of from friends and the one I’ve been through have been usually one-on-one or a couple of interviewers for an applicant. Hmm. Anyway, it seems apparent now that Morita’s brother will not be making an appearance here and that part of their story is out. Not that I mind much, though. As usual, Lohmeyer-senpai pops up now and then, I think he’ll pretty much be around in every single episode. It seems he even has more screentime than Nomiya and Miwako. LOL. Oh, and again, please pardon me on the timer thingy on some of the caps… I’ve recently discovered the much easier way of taking screencaps through media player classic. Why did I just find out about it now? Heh. xD
Speaking of Miwako, They added in that part of Miwako being hospitalized… and Mayama betrayed her trust by telling Nomiya of her injury even though he said he won’t tell anyone. xD Nothing serious, of course, just for laughs. Poor Takemoto getting a string of bad luck. In general, I can say that I can quite relate to his experience. Contemplating what exactly is it that I want to do career-wise, wondering which move to make, second-guessing decisions. Normal things that are part of life. Oh, and I think I might have mentioned this before, but Mayama here is not so much of the stalker that he was in the anime, which isn’t exactly such a bad thing. Haha. He’s more of broody, sulky and emo. Unlike in the anime, I suppose his stalker tendency towards Rika won’t come off as funny in the drama and probably be more on the creepy side so they toned it down significantly. xD Mukai Osamu did a pretty good job showing us Mayama’s emo side, getting all confused and frustrated with his feelings for Rika. Well done!
I liked the role that Miwako is having in Mayama, Rika, Nomiya and Yamada’s storyline. Though in a different setting and situation, she still has the older sister kind of role that she had in the anime, giving out advice to those four and providing some funny moments. Of course, I liked the Nomiya x Yamada moments! However, the part when he asked “Does it have to be him?” (or something like that) felt a bit out of place to me since they haven’t shown much of the two of them spending time together yet. I guess it seemed that way to me since they had more development relationship-wise in the anime. I wonder if I’d still think that way if I haven’t seen it before the drama. Either way, they’re still my favorite pair. ^_^
Some quotable quotes:
- Takemoto: “When humans stand at a crossroad in their life, I wonder how they see the right path to take. I wonder if you’ll realize it if you continue to search.”
