Episode 03: “Summer, a crush scattering like firework”
BRIEF SUMMARY: Miwako invites Mayama to work at Fujiwara Design. Mayama politely declines. Mayama is still all emo over Rika discharging him from Harada Design.
Yamada’s taking care of her plant, notices one of the stems is bent and a thread away from breaking off completely. Her father notices this too and encourages her to take it down herself, saying, “If you don’t get rid of the bad part, a new one won’t grow.” At campus, Yamada finds Mayama by the bulletin board. She tells him “I decided not to chase after things I know I can’t obtain. Even for love, if you waste time, you’ll miss your next chance. I can’t chase after you forever.” She puts on a brave, smiling face, asking him to do his best too. She starts to cry as she walks away.
At Harada Design, Takemoto helps out Shuji and Rika. He overhears them talking about Mayama. He learns that the reason Mayama declined the offer from Fujiwara is because he’s still hoping Rika would change her mind and ask him to come and work for her again. Mayama talks to Shuuji and tells him that if he needs someone’s help with regard to Rika, he should be the one he asks and not others (like Takemoto).
We learn Rika’s backstory. Flashback: Harada is about to go for a flight. Rika accidentally trips and hits a pot of boiling water, which spilled on her arm, burning her skin. Harada accompanies her to the hospital, in turn missing his original flight. After making sure she’s fine, he goes for a later flight which we later learn to have crashed. Rika blames herself for his death. Back to present. Shuuji tells Mayama that it’s pointless to wait for Rika at Mayama’s current state since he can’t give her what she needs. She doesn’t merely need someone to hang around her, she needs someone who can support her more than that. Mayama goes to the Fujiwara office and now accepts Miwako’s offer for a job. Nomiya says no since Mayama declined the initial offer. Mayama apologizes and says he changed his mind. Before Nomiya can say anything more against it, Miwako steps in and welcomes Mayama aboard Fujiwara Design.
Hagu stops by Yamada’s house to get ready for the festival, both of them dressing up in yukatas. At the festival, Mayama bumps into Yamada and tells her she looks good in her yukata. Yamada is speechless, later cries when she gets back home. Meanwhile, Morita sets up Hagu and Takemoto to watch the fireworks together on the rooftop of one of the school buildings. Takemoto is happy, but not for long. He notices that Morita is the one Hagu wants to watch the fireworks with and not him. 😦

IMPRESSION: Several LOL moments. I like how Takemoto panics whenever Hagu calls him on his cell phone. (cue my fangirl *squee*) So cute and funny! The part with Yamada embarrassingly remembering the piggyback+ “Suki” moment she had with Mayama, then splashes her feet in the basin of water, seemingly annoyed at her foolishness that time was also nice. Then theres the part when Takemoto tackles Morita to stop him from yelling out to Hagu that Takemoto likes her. Poor Takemoto being a victim of Morita’s pranks yet again. xD Speaking of Morita, he is starting to annoy me. As usual, Lohmeyer makes an appearance yet again.
Significant difference with Rika’s backstory. Instead of the car accident from the anime, they downplayed it to Harada being involved in a plane crash. Rika feels guilty because she was the reason he took a different flight and blames herself that he died. It also seems that the storyline with Morita and his brother will not be included here as well and will probably be changing Morita’s character story as well, not that I mind much though. I guess they just don’t have enough time to squeeze everything in story-wise.
Some quotable quotes:
- Lohmeyer-senpai, saying that suikawari is similar to falling in love: “You continue to walk relying on the voice of others. When you feel you are certain, you lower the stick with all your might… Whether or not you believe the voice of others is your choice.”
- From Yamada’s father noticing the bent part of Yamada’s plant, encourages her to take it down herself, saying, “If you don’t get rid of the bad part, a new one won’t grow.”
- At campus, Yamada finds Mayama by the bulletin board. She tells him “I decided not to chase after things I know I can’t obtain. Even for love, if you waste time, you’ll miss your next chance. I can’t chase after you forever.”

Things are looking good. I like that twist in Rika’s backstory. ^^
I couldn’t stand watching this drama for some reason although that guy who’s also from Hana Kimi is really adorable :3
I remember watching episode 2, I think, where that … girl … saw a crying kid and did this weird thing. It was hilarious.
@shinji: I thought it was a nice twist too. I was never a fan of Rika x Mayama though. xD
@blissmo: LOL, that’s okay. To each his own, ne? He was really good as Nakatsu in HanaKimi and his casting as Takemoto here is perfect!
Oh yeah, the “komenich” thing silly Morita taught Hagu. It was weird and I didn’t really get that. xD For me, part of the reason I liked H&C was because of Mayama, Yamada, Nomiya plus Takemoto’s insightful thoughts. =)
