Episode 23: ” A Genius Teacher, Who is Not a Kid, Appears ” (Chibikko de wa nai Tensai Sensei Kitaru)
Summary: It’s the new semester and Hayate is quite excited to go back to school. He tells Maria that he’s going to wake up Nagi but Maria says Nagi won’t be going to school since she caught a fever. In Nagi’s room, she calls Hayate and tells him she’s going to school. Hayate tells her she can’t since she’s sick but Nagi insists saying that school is only meant to be skipped when you’re in good health. Hayate dismisses this and tells her she must stay home and rest then tells her he would skip school too in order to nurse her back to good health. Nagi blushes but declines Hayate’s offer, telling him that one missed day for a transfer student like him is detrimental to a transfer student like him so he should go to school and not to worry about her.
In school, Hayate runs into Hinagiku and tells her he wasn’t able to master an ultimate move over the summer. Hinagiku says there’s no need to rush then wonders where Nagi is. Hayate tells her Nagi is sick so Hinagiku says she’ll pay Nagi a visit after school. Yukiji-sensei hastily runs over to Hina and asks for her help. Yukiji-sensei tells Hayate and Hina that she’s worried since a new teacher is coming and got demoted to sub-homeroom teacher. They later learn that Makimura (the nursing robot developer from episode 21) is the new homeroom teacher. It turns out that Makimura was sent by her superior to be a teacher at her old high school, Hakuou Academy, in order for her to learn what heart is (which her superior says is the most important aspect for a scientist). Yukiji-sensei is really bitter about getting demoted so she makes up a mischievous plan to get back her position as homeroom teacher. Meanwhile Segawa-san (one of the girls of the “3 stooges”in class) gives Hayate the handouts for Nagi. It turns out that Segawa is the class rep and also one of the members of the student council.
Yukiji-sensei then shows up and asks for Hayate’s help. She explains her long plan which overall comes down to taking a picture of Makimura hugging Hayate by accident then spread it around school so Makimura would be forced to quit. Hayate excuses himself and says he will not be a part of such an evil plan. Yukiji tries to forcibly stop Hayate from leaving and they both struggle. Makimura then appears and asks if there’s a problem, suprising both of them. Yukiji makes up a lie and asks Hayate to cover for her too and pushes Hayate towards Makimura. It turns out that she pushed Hayate too hard so he ended up bumping into Makimura and both of them fell to the ground in a pretty awkward position. Yukiji takes a photo of them and says she never thought she would get that kind of photo by accident. She tells them that she will post it around campus. Hayate is worried about this but then thinks he just has to clearly explain what happened and that it was an accident. This will be a bit hard though as Makimura misunderstands the situation and thinks that due to this incident, she won’t get married any more. Hayate is worried that she might shame Nagi because of this misunderstanding so he goes out to find Yukiji and get the memory card from the camera to clear his name. Meanwhile, Hina is at Nagi’s place for a visit where Nagi is telling Hina about her wonderful summer with Hayate.
Back in school, Hayate is chasing Yukiji-sensei in his quest to get the memory card and clear his name. Yukiji is pretty good at evading him. As they chase each other further Yukiji drops the camera as a newly improved robot Eight stands in their way and crushes the camera. He then asks if Yukiji was the one who made Makimura cry. Yukiji denies this and tells him it was Hayate’s fault. Eight then attacks them both. Yukiji says she will not be picked on and fights Eight. Hayate wonders what he can do then notices a self-destruct button at the back of Eight. Hayate wonders if he should press it. Being the gentleman that he is, he is worried about Segawa-san since she is wearing a skirt and the explosion might send them flying off and her skirt might lift up. Segawa tells Hayate not to worry since she is wearing sports shorts underneath her skirt just like Hina, so she is fine. Hayate then rushes to push the button but before he can do so, Yukiji ends up hitting it herself, causing a huge explosion.
Yukiji-sensei then talks to Makimura and goes on a speech about how this incident is sad and that nothing is born out of violence. Yukiji still puts the blame on Hayate but asks Makimura to please forgive Hayate at Yukiji’s request as his teacher and that it’s the teacher’s job to teach and guide students like him. Yukiji keeps on going with the speech with tears saying that even though students can be hardheaded, she will never look away from them because she is their teacher. Makimura then runs up to Yukiji and tells her that she now understands how heart is important and that she respects Yukiji and wants to be like her. Yukiji tells her that she will help her on her road to becoming a better teacher and hugs Makimura with an evil look in her eyes. Poor Hayate is left lying on the ground from the explosion, wondering what all his efforts today are for. Yukiji invites Makimura and Eight out for a drink but then ends up paying for it herself since Makimura says she is her senpai.

My Impression: Another bit of a random episode, mostly about Yukiji-sensei. I liked the first part wherein Nagi was telling Hayate to go to school and not to worry about her, as she coughs while telling him this and Hayate getting all worried. It was pretty funny. The references to Death Note was pretty much obvious in this one and it’s quite funny to see Yukiji turn into Kira mode with her eyes turning red saying she will be the “God of the New World.” The references I caught weren’t much… Death Note, Voltes V (I think), and a reference to something related to Power Rangers or Bioman.
Next episode: Isumi comes over to the Sanzenin mansion for a visit and unintentionally causes some misunderstandings between Isumi, Hayate, Nagi and Wataru.
