“First Movement” (special episode 1 of 2)
Note: There are some bits of (fangirl side comments) from me throughout the summary… I couldn’t help it. :3
SUMMARY: New school term starts at Seiso Academy. We get a glimpse of each of the guys: Tsukimori practicing violin, Tsuchiura playing soccer, Hihara and Yunoki in their classroom, Shimizu on his way to school. Onto the girls, Fuyumi joined the orchestra club during summer break. Hino continues with her violin lessons. She also notes they’re all changing little by little, and it’s a new season too.
Hino practices her violin in the school garden grounds (“Sicilienne” by Faure). Lili appears and says he’s glad to know that Hino continues to play even after concours and wants to get better on her own. Bells ring, so she runs to class or she’ll be late, then kinda bumps into a snobby looking guy in a suit.
Kanaya-sensei announces there’ll be a final selection to pick a grand winner for the previous concours in which no one really won. For the “new final competition” (a new one since the previous finals did not have a winner), each finalist will choose one of the pieces they performed previously in the concours. This event was decided by the new chairman of the school (who happens to be the snobbish looking guy, Akihiko Kira, whom Hino bumped into earlier). Kira is the son of the family that founded Seiso Academy.
We learn that Yunoki is planning to go to the USA to study for his MBA while Hihara says he wants to continue at Seiso College, although he seems a bit unsure of what he wants. During the final competition, the participants play well while Kira sits expressionless as he watches. As Tsukimori plays his piece, a blonde dude passes by the music hall and hears him playing. Blonde dude gets a flashback while listening: He is reminded of his youth where he probably heard the same kind of tune (or playing style). Flashback reveals to us that it’s chibi Tsukimori who chibi blonde dude heard back then. Back in the finals, Tsukimori (“Caprice No. 24” by Paganini) wins first place, Tsuchiura (“Fantaisie-Impromptu” by Chopin) gets second, and Yunoki (“Partita in A minor” by Bach) gets third.
Later, we learn that blonde dude is Aoi Kaji, a newly transferred student in Hino’s class. Kaji is extremely happy to find Hino in the same class (Lol, blushing while saying that too) He suddenly holds her hand then says he came to that school to meet her (he does this with the whole class witnessing his gesture and hearing his words… he has guts! xD) Hino wonders if they’ve met somewhere before. Everyone is now talking about the Kaji, who’s apparently an amazing guy who’s good at everything. At the cafeteria, Amou (the reporter girl) asks Hino if she knows why Kaji’s chasing after her. Hino’s friends note that she’s dense with things like these (haha, so true!)
Before Kaji can approach Hino and her friends, Hihara and Tsuchiura get there first, saying that participants at the concours are to go the music classroom for a meeting. Kanaya and Kira meets the group. Kira announces that there’ll be a festival which is an important event because it’d be a good time to raise profile of school. Kira asks the group to perform at the event, well everyone except Hino. He haughtily and bluntly adds she’s not needed because she’s not good enough (then why the heck did you ask her to come to the meeting? Jerk.) Everyone is surprised. Kanaya tries to interfere (but is unsuccessful), even Yunoki comes to Hino’s defense saying he could’ve said it in a nicer way (Yeah, you tell him Yunoki!) Tsuchiura says he won’t accept leaving one of the members out of the peformance. Kira’s face stays expressionless as he says he has the final say.
Kanaya couldn’t do anything, remarking that Kira hasn’t changed. As the guys continue to express their disbelief at Kira’s decision, Hino concedes, saying she can’t play her instrument as well as they can at her current level. She tries to be cheerful and says she’ll come to listen to their performance, urging them to do their best.
She later practices at the garden grounds, thinking to herself that everything snobbyjerkface Kira said was true after all. Incidentally, Kaji is taking a stroll and hears music, noting that it’s not skilled but somehow captivates his heart, sounds so sad and painful that he can almost feel how the person who’s playing it feels. He’s surprised to see that it’s Hino playing. He wonders if she changed her violin or hurt her fingers that’s why her sound changed. He notes that he heard that the concour participants will be playing at the festival, but Hino sadly says she won’t be because she isn’t good enough. Kaji is surprised, saying the maybe the shock of not being able to participate has caused her to play below par. He asks if she’s free after practice (which she is) and takes her to a theme park and a few other places to try and cheer her up (aww, what a sweet guy!)
Hino remembers him saying he came to this school so he could meet her, then asks if they’ve met before. Kaji says he saw her playing the violin in the park and was so enchanted by it that he decided to transfer. Hino says something like “Sorry to be such a big disapppointment for you. Kaji answers “there’s nothing to apologize for.” (aww, he knows the right things to say at the right moments.) On their way home, they run into Kiriya Etou, who seems to be an (unwelcome) aquiantance of Kaji. Etou remarks that he heard that Kaji quit violin, which was probably a wise decision. (Oh, look, it’s snobbish guy #2!)
He rudely tells Hino that Kaji’s only into her because she plays the violin, and that they’re just wasting their time. She now figures out that Etou is the same guy who peeked at the music room where she was practicing and that he mouthed the words “you’re just wasting your time” after hearing her play the violin. Being the gentleman that he is, Kaji defends Hino, saying he doesn’t care what Etou says to him but Etou shouldn’t do that to Hino. Etou just scoffs and walks away.
Hino says others may think it’s a waste of time for her to continue playing the violin at her current level, but she doesn’t lose the feeling of wanting to keep on playing and she doesn’t want to quit. She then tries to change the subject… Hino: So you play violin too, huh?… Kaji: I’ll walk you home. (~Lol, he changed the subject too… ooh, i smell an emo backstory that’s probably connected to chibi Tsukimori…)
The next day, at ensemble practice, Kanaya notes everyone’s technique is good, but they can’t seem to play as one. (Duh, it’s because Hino isn’t there! She’s everyone’s heroine/inspiration/object of affection! :3) He’s worried about the festival and what Kira would say. Ousaki is present at the practice to listen/help out Kanaya and the group. Hihara remarks that despite Kira’s decision not to include Hino, he feels that she should be part of their ensemble to play at the festival with them. Tsukimori notes that it’s a fact that her level can’t keep up with them. Tsuchiura insists he can’t accept that Hino should be the only one left out.
Tsukimori asks, “Are you willing to lower the level of your own performance to match hers?” (he’s such a realist, I like that about him ❤). He adds that it’s not that he doesn’t want Hino to participate, but he thinks they should show their good face for the festival, to which Yunoki agrees. Shimizu wonders what their “best face” is. Hihara wonders if performing well is that important. Out of the blue, Shimizu says he wants a viola. He then plays a part of the piece they were practicing then notes that if they add a viola in that part, they could have a fuller sound. With that, Ousaki looks like he came up with some good idea.
Ousaki runs into Hino on his way home. He tells her that he entrered a competetion in Vienna and that it’s thanks to them. After hearing them play at the concours, he had the urge to further challenge himself musically. However, because of the Vienna competition, he’ll be missing an educational concert for the children at the festival. Hino says it looks like fun. Ousaki notes Hino could go in his place if she likes. Hino hesitates, so Ousaki says she doesn’t have to answer immediately and urges her to think about it. (Ousaki is still the ol’ reliable pep talk guy, I see ^^)
At home, Hino wonders if she should accept Ousaki’s invitation, and that she’s hesitating because she’s scared to stand up and play on stage with her current below par violin skills.
~ end of episode (to be continued in episode 2, which will air on June 5, 2009)
Other music in this episode:
- “Mélodie” by Tchaikovsky – the piece Hino was playing by the fountain at the beginning of the episode (and at the practice studio, too… I think. I’m not sure though, so please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong ^^)
- “Chaconne” by Vitali – the piece Tsukimori was playing at the practice room at the beginning of the episode.
- Will update again for any corrections, and also once I figure out what piece the ensemble was playing during practice towards the end of the episode… (Do you know? If you could tell me, that’d be great! ^^)
IMPRESSION: Man, I missed these guys! (~Tsukimori!!! Tsuchiura! Hihara! *melts*). Ahem, anyway, it looks like Hino’s slowly losing her confidence. Well, I would too if that snobby, expressionless Kira guy said those stuff to me, too. I still feel a bit tired whenever I listen to Shimizu talking with his sleepy voice. Haha. And until now, I still can’t quite grasp the idea that Shimizu is voiced by Fukuyama Jun. xD
Hihara is quite emo in this episode. His confusion on what he wants to do after high school is making him emo… Only thing I can say to Hihara is: Please do your best and get over this slump and be your usual energetic and fun self again! *sigh* It just isn’t the same without Hihara’s cheerfulness.
Moving on to the new characters…
(1) AKIHIKO KIRA – My first impression of him was “What a snob!” Good-looking, yes, but snobbish and a bit of a jerk. Calling the concour participants to a meeting, and then dropping Hino so bluntly like that, saying she’s not needed… Ouch. Why the heck did you ask her to come in the first place? What? Courtesy? Pfft. But yeah, there’s probably a backstory to his chara (I have a vague idea about it, thanks to Wiki).
(2) AOI KAJI – My first impression was “He looks pretty!” Lol, I didn’t like his voice much, seems a bit girly, imo. Anyway, I’m willing to overlook the girly voice because he’s such a sweet guy! He’s pretty and sweet and thoughtful. To me, Kaji came across as kinda like Tsuchiura (the almost perfect gentleman), but Kaji is more showy of his feelings… Between the two of them, Tsuchiura is more tsun while Kaji is more dere. Heh. :3 And with that little flashback when he was a kid, I smell a somewhat emo backstory for Kaji, which involves my dear Tsukimori (and chibi Tsukimori is so adorable! ^^).
(3) KIRIYA ETOU – My first impression was “Stalker?!” (~Lol, because he was peeking at Hino while she was practicing her violin in one of the music rooms!) During that last part where he was mocking Hino and Kaji, I was like “Oh dear, here’s snobby guy #2! He’s quite full of himself, isn’t he?!” Um, yeah, I wonder what his backstory is.
Oh, and in case you’re interested in more of my Corda babbles, check out my earlier “Bishounen Fever!” post which consists of my take (and fangirlism) on each of the Corda guys.
In general, I kinda thought the animation got a bit better this time. The movements seem to be more fluid than before, particularly when they’re playing their instruments. There was no OP in this episode. The ED was a slightly upbeat ballad, and like in season 1, the ED is sung by the guys’ seiyus (they call themselves “Stella Quintet“). I kinda liked the melody, and find it quite easy to the ears.
Just like the previous special summer episode, there’s nothing exceptional about this story, but still I’m glad to see the whole Corda crew once again, especially the guys. Swoon-inducing eye candy and colorful personalities. 😉 Okay, add in good ol’ classical music too (although none of the pieces were played in full, just snippets).
Anyway, I’m sure to do another summary for the second part of this 2-episode special come June. ^_^

nooooooooooo..it’s out already?! *rushes to utube* 😀
Haha, I want to punch that arrogant mr. good violinist! Well then, you should blame Lili’s stupidity! Rawr, Kahoko is being maltreated!
Meanwhile, I don’t feel any presence at all from the original male characters… Oh man, are you guys still there? If someone did anything, that would only be Ousaki.
@ nogizaka: Go, go, go!
@ foomafoo: Yeah, I agree. The main guys didn’t do much in this episode because it kinda focused more on Kaji and Hino. Ousaki has limited screentime, but is always useful and gets things done. Hopefully, Tsukimori and company will get more screentime and better roles next ep. ^^
err……………… when is the next episode?? what a cliff hanger XD man i love the first episode its truly a refreshing start for hino……w/out magic I hope kagi can help hino to mature in music……….XD together i mean maturing all the way……
@ 12ock: Episode 2 will air on June 5, 2009.
well i m looking forward for season 2, i like all the characters of this
La Corda d’Oro passo , this is my favt show. This inspires me in classical music.
No kidding!! I’ve already wanted to play the violin >.< I always want the radio channel to be the classical station xD
Hey ^____^
Would you happen to know what piece Kahoko was playing near the fountain at the very start? (the one where Kaji first saw her playing the violin)
nevermind 😛 It’s Mélodie by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky which she played on the 3rd Selection
@ smita: I do hope there’d be a season 2 as well. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to episode 2 in June.
@ Bambii: The violin is a very nice instrument to learn when you have the chance.
@ Fiona: Lol, OK. Thanks! Since you asked, I edited my post and also added some of the other titles of the music they played in this episode. It’s still incomplete though. ^^
I’m so bugged with the writer! how dare he let any one between kahoko and len! of course kaji is cute and all……… but still. By the way, when did the first ep of the 2ndo passo release. is the 2nd episode releasing on june 5th 2009 in india as well?
@ fiona: that was gavot ………………… well atleast that was what kazuki told kaho- chan
@ shisakura: Special episode 1 aired on March 26, 2009 in Japan and on Crunchyroll (streaming availability depends on your region). I’m not sure if episode 2 will be released in India on June 5 as well. Better check Crunchyroll for details or perhaps your local Animax.
by the way thanks a lot for that hazy! 🙂 :p
Heck! I really do LOVE LEN! Actually I’m very glad when I knew there is going to be another special episode few months ago-I really am freaking out! 😀 Now I’m looking for some video where I can watch this as soon as possible. Then I checked out Crunchyroll–I thought it’s my luckiest day–but look what we have here–it’s not available in our region. Bummer! Well I guess I still have to wait for Animax to air it or maybe on any other tv station–I wish someone will make me watch it… T_T
Right now, all I can say for those who can’t watch it (just like me), let’s just stick on reading manga for now. (You’ll be ahead than the anime you know!)
***SPOILERS***:
–> I am still freaking out since yesterday when I read on the manga that Ryoutarou finally confessed that HE LIKES HINO and guess on who? It’s on his all-time rival, LEN! 😀 And I still can’t believe it… Len is going to leave us, he’ll be going abroad… T_T I’ll miss you guys…
Don’t worry…… Ryotarou only confesses because he knows that len has feelings for kahoko……… he knows that if he confesses len will start to realise his true feelings toward hino 😛 🙂 😀
And P.S, P.S it won’t air on animax till after 2011 (depending on your country) =)
sionara….
@ Rika: Len is my favorite too! It’s really too bad that Crunchyroll has a region-lock thing in some of their series. I haven’t read the manga in a long while, I’d need to catch-up on the chapters soon. ^_^
where can i watch the first special episode?! i missed it 😥
Greetings,
Good day. To the one who made this review and summary. Great job. I’m a guy. Been a fan of Il Divo(hence my interest in La Corda) so many people think i’m gay. Well, the gossip will never end I guess..
heheh…Ahem…back to business..great review. Am glad the guys are back and the musical complexities are back in a new fresh list of episodes(sad for the june 5 release, too long). In any case, I would like to say that in the “NEW FINAL COMPETITION” as said by Kanaya(no offense and insults, was just stating terms)..the piece that Len Tsukimori played that got the win was “Paganini’s Carprice No.24.”…Earlier in the episode during the opening, he was indeed playing Vitali’s Chaconne. Don’t know the orchestra piece though. I wish Tsuchiura played Liszt’s La Campanella though..He would have probably won in my opinion..he did amazing on that..loved the intensity. Yunoki and his Vocalise was good too but I guess he decided not to play it. Well, just a small correction…Thanks a lot for the summary. -Kyle Matthew-
@ zaza: Crunchyroll is streaming it (although availability depends on your region). Better check their site for details or maybe Animax.
@ Kyle Matthew: Sorry, I mixed up the title of the pieces. Post now edited. Thanks for the correction! Glad to hear there are guys who like this series too. Since you seem to like classical music, I’d recommend you to try and watch the [Nodame Cantabile] series whenever you can. It’s pretty good (there’s also a J-drama version of it too, which was better than the anime, imo). ^^
So nice la wish seson 2 hurry up come out la…
I liked d first ep , I hope d next one comes soooooooon. ^__^
hazy, rika i agree sooooooo much with yol………….. was’nt able to come on the net for quite some time now………..
….LEN IS THE CUTEST GUY IN PRIMO PASSO…….
By the way i know that this is a LCDPP {la corda doro primo passo} page but can we talk about other animes like cardcaptor sakura, detective conan, gakuen alice ……….. etc.
i swear i know a hell lot about lot of animes. and if its not possible is there another web page like this???????
@ shisakura: I talk about other anime series in this blog too… Feel free to browse around. You can also check out my “blogroll” on the right side for links to other anime blogs. 🙂
Thanks a ton hazy!! but there is no Cardcaptor sakura??
And i did browse around ………… written a comment for Gakuen Alice… Check it out!!!
@ shisakura: Sorry, no Cardcaptor Sakura here. And yeah, I saw your comment in my GA post. Thanks! 🙂
does that mean that i won’t be able to give info about cardcaptor sakura ????? 😦
@ shisakura: Yep, sorry! Try other blogs or forums. I’m sure there’s one that has posts about Cardcaptor Sakura. ^^
OK 😉 thanks hazy! 🙂
Thanks hazy….. i tried 7 other blogs but none are as good as this one!!!!!!!
@ shisakura: ~Thank you! Try this [Cardcaptor Sakura fansite], I think it’s a pretty good site for CCS fans. It’s a fansite by one of my readers/commenters. I hope that helps. ^^

is anyone seeing the INUYASHA formation ??!! better see it …. just saw it on twitter……
(am i allowed to say this in this blog???….. please forgive me if i wasn’t suppose to say that! 😦 )
@ shisakura: Um, sure. What is it? I think it’d be better if you go to a forum though. The people there are more active in discussing various kinds of anime series. Try [this forum] I think it has Cardcaptor Sakura and Inuyasha threads too.
@hazy: it’s alright ……. i’ve got it all sorted out…..thanks anyway 😉
thanks 4 the forum though! ;D
i really like Len and kahoko to be couples…..
to the one making the la corda, i suggest that the there should be a romance between kahoko and Len….. i’m waiting for that to happen…..sana magkatuluyan sila…
@heidi: in the La Corda D’oro Primo Passo it is shown that len starts to like kahoko, and in Secondo Passo ,ryotaro tells len that he likes kahoko only so that len will realise that he likes kahoko…….i think kahoko likes len ….. its, just that she dosent know it …. but I’M NOT SURE……….so don’t put this as a spoiler!! 😉
today 2 good things happened to me ~ *i got the first rank in the whole 8th grade!!!(in my mid terms)
