Episode 04: “Pursuer”
SUMMARY: Akane is on the phone with Keita. She’s worried about Keita since he sounded really impatient on the phone. Excel stops the car and notes that she can can feel the same tera she previously felt. They enter the bank where Akane works. The white-haired dude with Excel approaches Akane’s counter with a customer number. Akane says his number is supposed to go to counter 3, but he holds her hand and notes that Akane has remarkable tera around her. Akane is confused about this, and assumes he is a foreigner. Excel goes all cutesy pretending he’s her father (haha, nice cover). White-haired dude apologizes to Akane for his odd behavior, then leaves the bank with Excel who concludes that Akane isn’t the contracted person, but wonders why she can sense a mototsumitama tera around Akane. As Akane leaves work, they follow her taxi.
Keita and Kuro are in a restaurant, where they meet up with Akane and they tell her what happened at school and how Kuro beat up his teacher who was apparently a bad guy. Akane wants to tell police, but Kuro and Keita disagree because the police won’t believe them anyway. Kuro says their enemy is her brother who is responsible for the abnormal flow of tera in the city. She adds that it is a mototsumitama’s duty to exterminate their fellow motosumimata who ignores their duty and disrupts equilibrium. She is confident they can do it because they can now synchro, and asks Keita to fight her brother together. Keita loses his cool, saying that Kuro only thinks of herself and decides things without checking how he feels about it. He insists that he still doesn’t want anything to do with her because his life got ruined because they met. Excel and the white-haired dude observes them, concluding there’s no need to confront them now and just continue to follow them to see what they’re up to. Meanwhile, the teacher Kuro beat up is being interrogated and tortured by Hiyou, who says he won’t kill teacher but will let him make a contract instead. Hiyou wonders if you can make a contract other than exchanging hearts. In another part of the city, we see suspicious glasses guy, who’s revealed to be named Kuraki, is in office. He delivers paperwork to Yuki, who’s apparently Akane’s root. We also meet Reishin, Kuro’s brother. Kuraki is his right hand man. They’re talking about some Kaionji group and Yuki asks Kuraki to continue searching for her doppeliner. Kuraki says he will, but then he doesn’t look like he likes being ordered around. We later see him erasing Akane’s image from surveillance tapes, and he seems to be an acquaintance of Keita.
Kuro has a talk with Keita while Akane orders some take-out food for them. Kuro says the contract can’t be canceled until the contractor dies. She says she’s heard some contracted partners hated each other until the end, but she hopes that the two of them can get along with and have faith in each other-. Keita changes the subject, noting that a suspicious car’s seems to be following them. As soon as Akane gets back to them, they make a run for it. As luck would have it, they then run into a road filled with Hiyou’s thugs. Their order is to bring back Kuro alive and kill the rest. They are outnumbered but Kuro decides to fights against the biker guys. Kuro shows them some fight moves, but she still ends up getting beaten again. Keita activates synchro, but it doesn’t seem to have an effect. Excel and white-haired dude comes to their rescue. Excel explains that they followed the flow of tera to track them. White-haired dude meets the Tribal Ends thugs and shows them what who’s boss. He effortlessly defeats most of the bad guys, while the others retreated.
Keita can feel they aren’t normal people. Excel asks Keita if he made a contract without knowing what he is. White-haired dude wishes to ask Keita some questions, but Keita punches him. Keita doesn’t like the fact that they followed Akane so that they could locate Kuro and him. Excel considers this as a challenge and accepts a duel between mototsumitamas. Kuro says she will protect her contractee until the end. Meanwhile, Yuki asks Reishin when he will make her the master root. Reishin says he needs to send Kuraki to Okinawa first before that.

THEY SAID WHAT? For quick reference, here are the list of terms used within this episode: Tera Guardian or Mototsumitama – God-like beings charged with maintaining the balance of existence. However, they can become corrupt which result in conflicts between them. Tera – Spiritual life force that inhabits all life-forms. Mototsumitama usually form contracts with humans with high amounts of tera because it enables them to use exceed more often. Doppeliner – one of three people with identical bodies and minds who share the same fate. Every normal human being begins as a doppeliner. If two of them meet, they die. The remaining luck and fate of the two go to the remaining person, called The Root, giving them unimaginable good luck. Tribal Ends – humans who have been given Tera Guardian powers by Tera Guardians. Synchro – The greatest initiation of a contract, usually when both partners have a shared will. When synchro is reached, a Tera Guardian’s power multiplies. However synchro is really strenuous on the human partner because the human shares all injuries the Tera Guardian receives. Contract – A pact or a bond made between a human and a Mototsumitama through sharing body parts. Exceed– Abilities used in fighting by the Tera Guardian once synchro has been initiated. Each Tera Guardian has a unique Exceed, and some may be dangerous to the human partner, due to the high use of tera. (*terms from wiki)
IMPRESSION: Nooooooooo! They cut the Kuro vs. white-haired dude fight for next ep, but I wanna see the fight NOW! That totally ruined the moment. Anyway, it seems Excel is a contractee of that white-haired dude. So that means he’s a mototsumitama like Kuro, albeit obviously a much stronger one. According to wiki, his name is “Steiner” but I don’t wanna make name assumptions so I’ll just wait until they mention his name in the anime (well, unless they already mentioned his name and I just missed the scene ^^;;). I like Excel, especially her attitude. I think those two would end up helping Keita and Kuro since they somewhat have the same goal with regard to the disruption of balance thingy. And what’s up with Kuro getting beat up, again? It’s no fun to see her that way. She should be the one doing the a$$ kicking, not the one being kicked around. If it’s because of the synchro thing, I hope they both get their act together to avoid getting clobbered by the bad guys.
We finally know suspicious-guy-with-glasses’ name, which is Kuraki. I knew it! He looked familiar! Kuraki is that guy from the photo at Keita’s house in episode 1! He’s Reishin’s right hand man but it looks like he has a plan of his own since he lied, saying he hasn’t found Yuki’s doppeliner yet but he obviously knows that it’s Akane. I wonder if Kuraki is a master root? I wonder what happened to him and Keita. In episode 1, it seemed to me that Keita thinks his friend is dead, but I might’ve misinterpreted that. Oh well, we’ll find out soon enough. We also got to meet Reishin, who’s Kuro’s brother. He keeps mentioning Okinawa, so something weird might be going on there too. I’m sure we’d learn about why Kuro wants to kill him in the following episodes.
*Edit: Okay, I’ve seen episode 5. And then I kinda got stuck and lost interest in watching the series. I’ll probably just marathon it later on. Somehow, the initial feeling of curiosity and intrigue that I had when I started blogging Kurokami suddenly went poof. Gone. I don’t feel like writing the summaries anymore. So this would be my last summary for this series. Sorry. Maybe I’ll write an overview after the series is done and give some final impression or something.
