Thoughts / Review: The OP theme is “Kurenai” by Ui Miyazaki.. The ED theme is “Erinyes” by BETA FLASH. I liked both songs, especially the ED which has this sort of mysterious vibe to the music.
ON A SIDE NOTE…. Night Wizard! is a Japanese urban sorcery action role-playing game released in 2002. The game is heavily influenced by the PC game Yoru Ga Kuru! by AliceSoft. The game has diligently collected fans by publishing campaign replays on magazines not related to tabletop RPGs, and having the characters role-played by anime voice actors and actresses. An anime television series adaptation animated by Hal Film Maker began airing in Japan on October 2007.
JUST A QUICK 411… There’s a bit of vocabulary on this series regarding wizards and such. I’ll try and give you the gist of the major terminologies used. EMULATORS – the antagonists; the dark tribe. When the red-colored moon rises up in the sky, the Emulators will begin to invade the human world. They are totally unaffected by science-based weaponry. NIGHT WIZARDS – Also known as Wizards or Magicians of Dark Nights. They utilize magic during battle. They are the only ones capable of fighting Emulators. RIKAI – a hidden world. The kingdom of the Dark Lords. The inhabitants of Rikai are constantly watching for opportunities to invade the external world (like our world). Rikai is thre world where the Emulators come from. ARTIFACTS – the weapons or magical object used by Wizards. THE DARK LORDS – powerful high-class Emulators. Their domain or kingdom is Rikai. BOOSTED MAN/WOMAN – They are Wizards that have altered bodies and/or minds for higher combat strength. They possess strong physical abilities. LUNAR ROBE – a personal barrier that can isolate Wizards from the world’s reality. Wizards can store away things in it, like weapons, bags, food, etc. It can also act as a protection from climate change (like cold or heat). There are a few more terms used, but these terms are the basic ones that are usually encountered, partciularly in the first few episodes.
AND THE CHARACTERS ARE… Episodes 1 and 2 introduces us to the main characters, namely, Renji, Elis, Kureha, Anzelotte, Akari and Bell Zephyr. HIRAGI RENJI – a Night Wizard who is constantly called upon missions, which leaves him practically not much time to attend school properly and successfully graduate. He goes to school in Kimei Academy with his childhood friend, Kureha. After Elis is informed of her mission Hiragi is tasked with protecting Elis. He and Kureha now live with Elis in order to guard her 24/7. He is known as the “Fallen Man” in school for hardly ever coming to school. His artifact is a sword. SHIHO ELIS – a recent transfer student to Kimei Academy. On her first day at school she was recruited into the Astronomy Club by Kureha. During a chance battle with an Emulator, her artifact named “Ain Soph Aur” which takes the form of a bracelet, revealed its power to protect her. It is later revealed that Elis is a Wizard and that her special ability to detect and recover the jewels will allow them to get to the Emulators world, Rikai, and destroy it once and for all. To do this she must first collect the seven jewels of virtue which are scattered around the world. When all have been collected and set in her bracelet, this will become the key to open the gateway to Rikai. AKABANE KUREHA – She is Renji’s childhood friend and schoolmate, and also a Night Wizard. She recruited Elis in to the Astronomy Club at Kimei Academy after asking her if she liked stars or not. Her artifact is a crossbow attached to her arm. HIMURO AKARI – Another Night Wizard who is in class 2-3 at Kimei Academy. She is a boosted woman and also a mercenary soldier. Her artifact is a broom known as Gunner’s Broom, which acts as a cannon. ANZELOTTE – She gives the missions to the Night Wizards and seems to be their superior. She lives in a castle which seems to be floating in above Earth or in another dimension. Whenever she asks a Night Wizard to do a mission, she says “For the request that I will ask you now please reply “Yes” or “Okay” which basically means they have no choice to decline the mission. BELL ZEPHYR – She is one of the powerful Dark Lords who looks like a teenage girl. She is modeled after Beelzebub and is also called “Queen of the Fly”.
MY IMPRESSION… I think it’s a pretty good one with an adventure/supernatural storyline. It’s adapted from an RPG game, so being a bit game-ish in its plot is pretty much given. The animation is a bit generic but it doesn’t look cheap and the character design is okay. This anime has a bunch of terms associated with it, as expected from its fantasy theme, but the story doesn’t have anything that’s too complicated to understand. Although the story is nothing special and pretty much typical in a way, I still found it quite enjoyable and funny, and ended up liking it. Heh, I kinda like Renji too, I thought he was cute and I love the running gag of his wanting so badly to go to school but can’t since Anzellote doesn’t give him much choice when assigning him missions.
I think it has enough amount of plot, action and funny moments that will keep me watching it. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s slated for only 13 episodes (I think), so I’m pretty sure that the story won’t feel to be dragging as you follow it. 😀
I’m not expecting anything epic from this one. Upon watching this, the goal in mind that I had is basically to just watch something for plain entertainment with some action/adventure and something fun to watch with a pretty decent storyline at the same time. If you’re a fan of the fantasy/adventure kind of anime, and if you don’t mind watching one that is based on a game, then I think you might enjoy this one.
