Episode 20: “Declaration of War! The Dangerous Beauty Who Burns with Jealousy!!”
Summary: Otani and Koizumi meet up in front of Otani’s house to go to school together. Koizumi greets him in a cutesy manner with a warm ‘good morning’. Otani is taken aback by this and responds by saying it’s gross. Koizumi is annoyed by this and asks, “What do you mean gross? Is that the attitude you should have towards your girlfriend?” Otani responds by asking her if she doesn’t think her attitude is a bit arrogant. Koizumi says she has suffered much up until now and blushingly adds she needs compensation. An annoyed Otani grabs her cheeks and pulls at her face asking “What do you mean ‘compensation’?” Just then Mimi appears and greets Otani with a cutesy ‘good morning’. Koizumi then remembers that she met Otani’s neighbor, Mimi, previously at the stadium (see episode 19). Koizumi then loudly remembers Mimi’s name and mistakenly calls her ‘Meimei-chan’. Otani corrects her. Mimi laughs it off telling Otani that his girlfriend is funny. Just then Otani looks at his wristwatch and notices that they’ll be late for school. Koizumi tells him it’s because he took long to get ready. Otani responds it’s because Koizumi was being stupid. They then go off to school together, leaving Mimi behind. After Koizumi waved goodbye to Mimi, Mimi frowns after Koizumi with a challenging stare.
At school, Otani and Koizumi tell their friends that they are now a couple. Nobu, Nakao, Chiharu, Suzuki and Seiko congratulate them and say they are happy to hear this. Haruka is in shock after hearing this. Both blushing, Koizumi thanks them for their support and well wishes while Otani tells them not to make such a big deal out of it. Haruka then seems to get over from his moment of shock and goes over to Koizumi asking, “Why?! Please tell me why Risa?” Haruka tells Koizumi to think about this seriously and that it’s weird for her to choose a guy like Otani. This annoys Otani and they get into a bit of name-calling. Haruka then admits defeat and breaks down on the floor in tears, dramatically saying he knew this day would eventually come. Chiharu then remembers that their teacher was looking for Koizumi and Otani earlier. They both go to the faculty room to see their teacher. Apparently, they both forgot to do their summer homework and are told off for it, adding that they need to hand it in by Monday.
On the way home, Koizumi tells Otani she totally forgot about the homework and suggests that they work on it together. Otani asks her where she wants to work on the homework and asks if she wants to do it with Suzuki and the others in the library. Koizumi notes it’s a bad idea since when she’s in a quiet place like the library she’ll be all “eek.” Otani agrees and after a bit of pause asks if Koizumi wants to work on the homework at his house. Koizumi agrees with a smile. Otani smiles back. They then head off to Otani’s house and proceed to his room where, apparently, Mimi was waiting, sitting by the table. Otani and Koizumi are both surprised to see her there. Otani asks what Mimi is doing in his room. Mimi replies that she brought today’s milk for him. Koizumi is puzzled about this. Otani explains that Mimi brings him milk everyday saying it will make him taller. Mimi adds today she brought a special high-calcium milk straight from the pastures of Hokkaido. Koizumi can’t help herself from laughing. This earns her a smack behind the head from Otani. He then tells Mimi that if there’s nothing else, she should hurry and go home. Mimi says she wants to chat with Koizumi first. Otani says they have to study so she can’t do that. Mimi makes a sad face. Koizumi then tells Otani it’s okay and that they would chat only be for a bit. Otani tells Mimi to not take long to which Mimi agrees. Otani then gets called by his mom, leaving Koizumi and Mimi in his room.
Koizumi notes that Mimi is pretty tall and slim and asks how tall she is. Mimi says she’s 172 cm to which Koizumi replies that’s the same as her height. Mimi tells Koizumi that Otani always said that he’d never go out with a girl who’s taller than him. Koizumi confirms this then adds that for some reason Otani doesn’t seem to mind her height. Mimi asks Koizumi if she knew that Otani’s last girlfriend was really short. Koizumi says she knows and that she was small and cute. Mimi then adds that’s why she gave up on Otani. This surprises Koizumi and asks Mimi if she likes Otani. Mimi then timidly confirms this saying that Otani likes short girls but she’s tall that’s why she brings Otani milk everyday so that he will grow taller and decided that when Otani grows taller than her, she will become his girlfriend. Koizumi doesn’t know what to say except sorry. Mimi then goes into scary mode and tries to stab Koizumi’s hand lying on the table with the mechanical pen she’s holding, missing it by a few centimeters. Koizumi screams in surprise as Mimi looks on with disdain saying that she missed. Mimi then grabs Koizumi’s shirt and pulls her closer telling Koizumi that she’s got some nerve to tell her “sorry” and asking what kind of dirty trick she did to get Otani to like her. Koizumi is now sweating in fear as Mimi goes on threatening her saying Otani can’t possibly have a girlfriend like her and that if Koizumi gets closer to Otani, she’ll make what’s left of her life extremely painful. Koizumi is almost in tears in fright of seeing Mimi’s scary mode when Otani suddenly appears bringing some cake and tea with him. Koizumi crawls to Otani asking him to save her as Mimi turns back into cute mode for Otani to see, asking Koizumi nicely if she can start eating the cake, telling Otani that his girlfriend is nice. This makes Koizumi wonder if the scary Mimi was just her hallucination. As Otani looks away from Mimi and asks Koizumi if she’s okay, Koizumi sees a dark aura emanating from Mimi who gives another threatening stare then goes back to cute mode immediately as Otani talks to her. Koizumi realizes that it wasn’t a hallucination after all.
The next day at school, Koizumi is reading a fashion magazine with Mimi in it. It turns out that Mimi is also a model. Koizumi decides not say anything to Otani about the scary encounter with Mimi. On the way home, Otani asks Koizumi if she wants to do something fun after turning in their homework successfully. Koizumi agrees and cheerfully thinks to herself that no matter what happens to her or what’s said to her she’ll be happy as long as she has Otani’s love. Just then, she hears someone calling out to Otani as Mimi appears. Otani asks her what she’s doing there. Mimi replies that she and Koizumi are getting along and asks if the 3 of them are going somewhere together right now. This leaves Koizumi speechless. Otani says that if that’s the case then he’ll leave the 2 girls and won’t come along as he doesn’t want to walk home stuck between 2 amazons. As Otani goes home by himself, Koizumi calls after him desperately. Mimi then goes to her scary mode and tells Koizumi that they need to have a little talk.
The 2 of them go to a family restaurant, as Mimi is staring intently at Koizumi while they are sitting. Mimi breaks the ice by asking how someone like Koizumi managed to get to the point of going out with Otani. Koizumi brightly answers that she worked really hard. This pisses Mimi off as she yelled at Koizumi saying she worked really hard too and adds that she’s in cute mode when she’s with Otani and that she’s been acting like that ever since she met him, telling Koizumi she has no idea how tiring it is to act all cutesy. Mimi then adds that she also gives Otani milk every day but he hasn’t grown at all since his 1st year of middle school while she was already 170 cm when she was in elementary school. This surprises Koizumi who goes on saying she was already 168 cm when she was in 6th grade. Mimi asks if she’s serious. Koizumi says she has been always put in the back of the line ever since kindergarten because of of her height and that she was taller than the tallest boy. Mimi agrees and says it’s the same with her. They were going on a friendly talk about this when Mimi realizes she was being friendly and goes back to her scary mode. Mimi tells Koizumi that when Otani was going out with his ex-girlfriend who was short and cute, she completely gave up and notes that that girl was really sweet and that she was hoping that deep down she would’ve been nasty. Koizumi replies that the ex-girlfriend wasn’t like Mimi. Mimi absentmindedly says “Yeah, yeah. Deep down I’m a really nasty-” then gets cut off realizing what she was saying then angrily yells at Koizumi noting that when Otani broke up with the previous great girlfriend he now moved on to a tall and stupid girlfriend. Mimi then adds that she will not lose to Koizumi and that she will definitely win Otani back. She walks off saying that’s all she had to say. Koizumi stops her bashfully asking if Mimi could lend her money since she only has 50 yen on her. This surprises Mimi yelling that Koizumi had some guts going into a family restaurant like that with just that much money. Koizumi adds that she forgot she bought a magazine earlier with Mimi as a model in it that’s why she only had 50 yen left. Mimi is flattered by this and said she will lend her money in that case but then it turned out that she left her purse at work and had no money at all. They are wondering what to do and ended up calling Otani for help to pay for their check.
As the 3 of them walked home, Mimi suddenly asks Otani what exactly it is that he likes about Koizumi. Otani is taken aback by this sudden question. Mimi notes that Koizumi is nothing like his ex-girlfriend, she’s taller than him, she goes to a family restaurant with only 50 yen on her and she just can’t see what’s so great about Koizumi. Otani says this isn’t the time or place to talk about this. Mimi says she has to know. Otani responds by saying it’s none of her business then notices that Mimi is almost about to cry. Koizumi is about to intervene and talk to Otani when Mimi blurts out that it is her business because she likes Otani more than Koizumi does. This surprises Otani prompting him to ask Mimi if she’s serious. Mimi then runs off yelling that Otani is an idiot. Koizumi tells Otani that she’ll go after Mimi. She thinks to herself that she understands how Mimi feels as she goes on to look for Mimi.
She then finds Mimi sulking. Mimi sees her and grabs her shirt tearfully asking Koizumi if Otani said anything and if he was angry at her after she ran off and yelled that he is an idiot. Koizumi says Otani is not angry and that Mimi doesn’t need to worry about it since Otani really is an idiot after all noting that it was stupid of him to react that way after a confession. Mimi then defends Otani and says that she was the one who was wrong for confessing so suddenly like that and tells Koizumi off to not say bad things about Otani. She then cries saying she’s never talked to Otani that way before and that she said something that she shouldn’t have said. Koizumi is about to comfort her as Mimi slaps Koizumi’s hand away saying that this is all Koizumi’s fault that her life is falling apart. She then angrily grabs Koizumi’s shirt again and shakes her, calling her names, as Mimi vents out her anger at Koizumi. After a while, she notices that Otani followed them and is now standing a few feet away. Otani is quite surprised to see all that’s happened.
The next day at school, Koizumi notes that Mimi might be down now that Otani saw her true colors. Otani asks if she means that the Mimi he knew all along was fake. Koizumi says Mimi was just acting cute in front of the guy she likes and that she does it too. Koizumi then asks if Mimi has contacted Otani after that. Otani said she has and Mimi told him the 3 of them should do something after school that day. Nobu then notes that since Mimi’s cover had been blown, she’s now going to get serious. Koizumi then thinks to herself that she won’t lose and that she won’t let all of her hard work to go to waste. Later that day, Mimi meets up with them and immediately clings to Otani’s right arm while Koizumi does the same on his other arm.
They then proceed to the arcade where Otani and Koizumi are going all out trying different games together and enjoying to their heart’s content like a couple of idiots. Mimi is quite shocked to see this. After a while, they notice that Mimi is not with them and looks for her. It turns out that Mimi was just standing behind them, still in shock. Koizumi and Otani invite her to come and play with them. Mimi replies that she’s going home. This surprises them. As Mimi walks away, Otani goes after her saying that there’s something he wants to say to her properly. Mimi says she doesn’t want to hear it since she is sure that Otani is going to reject her. Otani repeatedly asks her to listen to him. Mimi keeps yelling “no” and covering her ears as Otani is talking since she doesn’t want to hear what he has to say.
This eventually earns Mimi a punch from Koizumi. This takes Mimi by surprise. Koizumi goes on asking she thought Mimi liked Otani more than she did and asked if it was all just talk. Mimi responds by yelling, “You’re his girlfriend! Like you’d know how it feels to be rejected!” Koizumi yells back, “I do know! I was rejected too! Twice!” This surprises Mimi. Koizumi adds that she thought about giving up too but in the end she kept trying and that she might be Otani’s girlfriend now but he still calls her idiot and says she’s gross all the time saying she can hardly tell whether he actually likes her or not but that she loves Otani more than she can say so it’s fine. Neither Otani nor Mimi can say anything after hearing this. Koizumi adds that she isn’t going to give Otani up to someone who just runs away when they get rejected. Koizumi then storms off. Mimi is almost in tears.
On the way home as Koizumi and Otani are going down the stairs, Koizumi asks if Mimi walked away after she stormed off. Otani said Mimi didn’t but she said she can’t deal with an idiot like Koizumi so she was giving up on him. Otani stops for a moment remembering what Mimi said a while ago. Apparently, when Koizumi stormed off, Mimi told Otani that it must have hurt Koizumi a lot the first time Otani rejected Koizumi but she still worked real hard to win him over, and Mimi thinks Koizumi is amazing for that. Back on the stairs scene, Otani smiles as he remembered this.
As he goes downstairs after Koizumi, a couple of steps higher than her, Otani asks Koizumi “What was that you were saying back there? Something about not being able to tell whether I actually like you or not, wasn’t it?” as he kisses Koizumi right then and there. A blushing Koizumi is silent for a while then smiles saying that Otani deliberately stood on higher steps. A blushing Otani replies it wouldn’t have been as cool if they were standing on level ground. They go on walking as Koizumi holds Otani’s hand thinking to herself that a lot has happened but that from now on, she hopes they can be together like this forever.
At school, Maity-sensei asks the older teacher if he was writing test questions. The older teacher replies that he was just looking over the previous questionnaires on what the students aim to do in the future. Maity notes that it’s almost time for them to make their final decisions. The older teacher confirms this then adds “It looks like All Hanshin-Kyojin will finally have to break up” as the camera pans to a close up of the questionnaire answered by Otani where his future plans indicate that he wants to proceed and attend a university.
~ end of episode
My Impression: I think I overdid the screencaps for this one and I didn’t realize until it was done that the text I did for the summary was quite long. I think I got a bit carried away. Haha.
Anyway, another nice episode. I loved how Haruka was so dramatic reacting to Otani/Koizumi couple. ~Lol. That reaction of his where he said something gibberish was so funny. It was really sweet of Otani to invite Koizumi over at his place to do the homework. Oh and the part when they went to the arcade with Mimi… ~Lol. With the 2 of them all excited and giddy, moving from one game to the next and talking in their own language was priceless!
Kyaaa! The stairways scene with the kiss near the end of the episode was so sweet! Otani may act like an idiot sometimes but he’s an adorable and thoughtful one at that. Such a nice scene. Can’t wait for the next ep! Too bad it won’t be aired until Sept. 8… but I’d still be eagerly waiting! ^_^
Next episode: Otani and Koizumi learn of what each of them plans to do in the future and it appears that they might go a different path from each other! Will they have to break up?! (Note: Episode 21 will be aired in Japan on Sept. 8, 2007, so the subbed version would probably be released about a week after that)
