Episode 18: “The Rare Card is Swimsuit” (Rea Kādo wa Mizugi Desu)
Summary: Nagi, Hayate and a few other classmates are off to a beach class onboard Hakuou’s private jet. They are set to land on Hakuou Academy’s private tropical resort island where beach classes are exclusively held. There’s just a few participants since the cost to join the trip was very expensive. Hayate’s fare was paid by Nagi. Hinagiku is also not part of the trip since she’s scared of airplanes (however various screenshots of Hina in swimsuit appears throughout the episode). Anyway, back to the story, they are welcomed by the newly-appointed butler and manager of the island, Schmidt who says that he’ll do his best to help them create fun summer memories.
After settling in their respective rooms, the students are called by Yukiji-sensei to change into their swimwear and told that they will warm up in the pool before heading to the ocean. As they are about to jump into the pool, a giant robot (which resembles a Gundam mecha and the like) appears. Schmidt is driving it and says that this is a “synchronized swimming manipulation machine” which apparently ties you down with puppet strings and makes you dance with Schmidt in control saying this is part of the attraction for creating fun summer memories. The students are then forced to dance around in the pool, even Hayate was dragged into this. After the grueling synchronized routine, everyone seems a bit traumatized by it. Yukiji-sensei was about to punch Schmidt when a bell rings signaling lunchtime.
Schmidt says that a barbecue is set out by the beach. He also says it’s boring to eat lunch wearing their school swimsuits so he prepared some nice swimsuits that are more appropriate. He says he will be the one to pick the swimsuits for them and that he’ll take care of the changing too by using another mecha to do the job. Nagi and Hayate note that Schmidt seems to be enjoying this. Dressed up in their “more appropriate” swimwear, Yuki-sensei and the rest of the class go to the barbecue. Schmidt then appears saying he’s prepared something for lunch for more fun memories. The thing he prepared turned out to be a live alligator to feed on. Meanwhile, Isumi appears to be on her way to beach class but got lost while Hina was spending her time in the city.
After the commotion with the alligator at lunch, there is now some free time and marine sports was being undertaken by everybody. Nagi chose to walk down the shore with Hayate. She tells Hayate that this is what she enjoys most doing rather than playing like the others at the beach. Yuki-sensei watches the students in the ocean through her binoculars. Schmidt offers her a drink. A bit later, a huge mechanical whale swallows those on the ocean. It seems that Schmidt is again behind this saying they will now embark on an undersea cruise. By suppertime, they are back at the hotel set to have a nice formal dinner. The students start to complain that they’re not having fun at all and they want to go home. Yuki agrees and tells them Schmidt that they don’t want to be forced into his fun anymore. Even the other butlers Himuro, Nonohora and Hayate agree that they should all go home.
In one last attempt, Schmidt says they would have to go fight against several costumed and masked people to get out of the place. Everyone is doing their best to fight. Yuki eventually is the one who knocks out Schmidt with what seems to be a giant mason. They then all board the jet to go home. While looking outside the window, they notice that they are flying over the mountains and seems to be going the wrong way instead of going back to Hakuou Academy. Yuki-sensei goes to the cockpit to ask the pilot where they’re going. The pilot is revealed to be Schmidt who says that he’ll take them to mountain class if they don’t enjoy beach class.
Meanwhile, back in the Sanzenin mansion, Maria is with 2 of Sakuya’s butlers for a short interview with them about what they do on weekends.
~ end of episode
My Impression: I guess much of the reference is relating to the mechas that Schmidt controls while yelling several attack modes. I think there’s a bit of Code Geass in there and Gundam. The mechanical whale reminded me of the story of Jonah. There was also a bit of reference on something related to Ikebukuro in the scene with Hina in the city and Three Stooges referred by Yuki-sensei and there’s some Dragonball Z. That’s about all the references that I caught in this episode.
There is much fanservice on this one with the swimsuits. Despite that, I think this seemed to be a bit below the level of the other previous episodes. It wasn’t as funny and seems a bit boring and random. Hopefully, we’ll see the usual hilarity and creativity of this series in the next episode.
Next episode: Something to do with Saki-san acting strangely and something about a coming of age party. We also get to see quite a bit of Maria and some Hayate x Maria moments! ^_^
