Here’s a rough list of Spring 2008 anime that will be airing this season. I see several titles with much hype that are eagerly anticipated to be seen by most viewers this season. As usual, batch lists of my first impressions will follow when the subs are released. I might have missed a few others, but either way, here’s the information that I’ve been able to gather (listed in alphabetical order). All series in this list will start airing in April.

Allison and Lillia

It is an anime adapted from the light novel series Allison and Lillia and Treize by Keiichi Sigsawa. The anime, produced by Madhouse and directed by Masayoshi Nishida, will originally start airing in Japan on the NHK television network in April 2008, and is set to contain twenty-six episodes. The 2nd season of Code Geass. This is also known as Code Geass – Hangyaku no Lelouch.

The following is the season 1 synopsis. I suppose it continues on from where it left off.
Synopsis: On August 10th, 2010, a.t.b., the Holy Empire of Britannia overpowered Japanese forces and conquered the country with their robotic weapons, the Knightmare Frames, in less than a month. Japan lost its freedom and rights and was renamed Area 11. The Japanese people, renamed as “Elevens”, were forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians lived in first-class settlements. Rebel elements persisted, however, as pockets of Japanese organizations who struggled against the Empire for the independence of Japan.
After his father, the Emperor of Britannia, did nothing to pursue the terrorists who murdered his mother and crippled his sister, the young prince named Lelouch vowed to destroy Britannia. Crystal Blaze

Synopsis: A corner of near-future Asia. Da Capo II Second Season

Synopsis: This synopsis is from season 1. The protagonist, Yoshiyuki Sakurai, was born when Sakura Yoshino, weary of being alone for so long, wished upon a prototype artificial wish-granting magical sakura tree for a family. Years later, though, the tree starts malfunctioning, granting all wishes, regardless of how impure. Sakura and Otome Asakura at first try to handle all the problems caused by it, but the situation gradually worsens and they have to choose whether or not to save — the island in Japan where the story takes place — by deactivating the tree which would erase Yoshiyuki’s existence in the process. Sakura makes a last-ditch effort to stop the tree by entering it directly, but fails. Yoshiyuki eventually manages to persuade Otome to choose the island over him, and she has the tree wither, revoking all the granted wishes, including Sakura’s. (from: Wikipedia)
Himitsu – Top Secret

Synopsis: The story takes place five decades from now, when brain scanners have been perfected to the point that the government can retrieve up to five years’ worth of memories from people’s minds — even if they are dead. The investigators of the National Research Institute of Police Science’s 9th Forensics Laboratory must weigh the ethical choices in the ultimate invasion of privacy as they delve into people’s minds to solve crimes. Ikuze Gensan

Synopsis: Not much info on this one. According to this PSP games site, Irem, known for bringing Japanese PlayStation Portable video games to North America, has picked up a new project in the form of Ikuze Gensan. It is scheduled to be released in Japan this coming Spring.
Ikuze Gensan is the story of a good-hearted carpenter who plans to stop an irresponsible construction company from creating chaos and destruction in the streets, amusement parks, and beaches. Despite being a carpenter, the main character Gensan is also capable of changing jobs that will ultimately affect his fighting style.
Itazura na Kiss

Junjou Romantica

It is a light novel series by Akira, with illustrations by x6suke. An anime adaptation was announced to start broadcast in 2008.

Macross Frontier

A preview airing of episode 1 was shown on December 2007.

Synopsis: The series celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV series (1982~1983), and is a direct sequel to Macross 7 (1994~1996). This third TV series features Earth’s latest main variable fighter, the VF-25 and a new spaceship called the Macross Frontier.
On the Macross timeline, the story is set on the year 2059. The series features the 25th colonial fleet, dubbed the Macross Frontier, en route near the galactic center.
During a mission to an unexplored asteroid belt, a reconnaissance New U.N. Spacy (N.U.N.S.) VF-171 is destroyed by extremely powerful & fast insectoid biomechanical alien mecha (called “Vajra” in the official site), which immediately begin their attack on the rest of the fleet. Neo Angelique Abyss

Synopsis: The basic lore of the series is built around a Queen who fairly and wisely rules a Cosmos. By balancing elemental forces with the help of nine Guardians, she keeps the various planets in her domain stable and her people content. However, the powers of the Queen and the Guardians fade over time, and successors must be appointed. In the first game and its various remakes, the protagonist is a 17-year-old girl named Angelique Limoges who has been chosen by the current Queen and her aide Dia as one of two candidates from the Royal Smallney Girls’ Academy to become the next Queen. She is transported to the Flying City to begin her final examination.
Each of the candidates is given a land to populate. Whoever finishes populating their land first wins and becomes the next Queen. It is done with the help of nine Guardians who use their powers to make the people of the candidate’s land happy, or to devastate their rival’s. Along the way, the candidates become friends with the Guardians and can fall in love. If they choose love, they forfeit their chance to become Queen, but will live happily ever after.

The story revolves a female thief named Chico, who is the spiritual successor to the Kaijin Nijū-Mensō (The Fiend with 20 Faces) thief character created by famed suspense and detective novelist Ranpo Edogawa. RD Sennou Chousashitsu

Synopsis: 2061 AD. Fifty years have passed since mankind developed the Network society. It was anticipated that this new infrastructure would realize a utopia where people connected with each other at the level of consciousness. However, new social problems such as personal data leaks and proliferation of manipulated information began to surface. Nevertheless, people still relied on the Network to exchange information, and proved unable to opt to abandon it.
In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. This was called Meta Real Network, usually abbreviated as “the Metal.” The Metal accommodated personal memory data within protected virtual stand-alone organic cyber enclaves called bubble shells and eventually pervaded the everyday lives of people. However, people gradually learned to release and explode their instincts within the secure environment of the Metal. Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon technicians, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon technician and a human weapon. Not much info on this one. According to a post in Anime Suki: Tenko Kuugen is a thousand-year-old demon/yokai fox that served as their guardian god for hundred of years, able to use all sort of spells, but has a extremely mischivious personility, playing all sort of pranks, until finally the Mitsuji family sealed it up, until present day, when a situation forced them to free it, after the crises, it quit it’s job and became the guardian god of the Takagami family, extremely smart and curious, it was able to figure out modern world technology, and learn to blend in, but has a personilty of doing as it please, it’s too old to remember it’s origional gender, so it has both male and female form. but doesn’t hate the Mitsuiji for sealing it up. likes the Takagami brother and will protect them at all cost. Synopsis: Taken from season 1’s synopsis: Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student plagued by yōkai, supernatural beings magically attracted to him. The creatures are invisible to others, and as a result he feels extremely burdened by them. When he quite literally stumbles into a shop that grants wishes, his life changes drastically.
The shop is owned by Yūko Ichihara, a mysterious, beautiful witch of many names and esoteric renown. The seemingly all-knowing witch offers to grant Watanuki’s wish to be rid of his ability to see spirits. However, in exchange, he must pay a price equal to the power required to grant the wish. Yūko discovers that Watanuki is very skilled with his hands and a hard worker. As a result, Watanuki is forced to perform housework and odd jobs for Yūko until he has done enough work for his wish to be granted.

- Several of the upcoming series sounds promising. I don’t have a definite watchlist as of yet but in the meantime, based purely on the synopses and the looks of it, the titles which sound interesting to me are:
Will probably check out…
- Itazura na Kiss – sounds cute. It’s slice of life and a romantic comedy, looks like a happy ending too.
- Kure-nai – somehow reminds me of Aishiteruze Baby, but probably with more action since it involves a bodyguard and it has comedy as part of the genre too.
- Nabari no Ou – sounds interesting.
- Real Drive (or RD Sennou Chousashitsu) - sounds interesting. Plus, it’s Production IG, so it’s worth a try for me.
- Toshokan Sensou – sounds interesting. Plus, it’s Production IG, so it’s worth a try for me.
- Vampire Knight – because it reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV series not the movie) and Angel.
- Special A - sounds okay, could be a cute romantic story, has bishies. I’m a bit hesitant, though, since Gonzo is behind it. I haven’t heard much positive things about Gonzo… so, um, yeah.
- Nijuu Mensou no Musume – sounds interesting.
I haven’t gotten around to watching xxxHolic’s 1st season yet and I barely got through Code Geass (I’ve been stuck at episode 10 or so), so I’m skipping those for now. ^_^

Definite watches for me would be Toshokan Sensou (I’m really enjoying reading the novel and manga of this one), Kurenai (I have high hopes for this one too. it also reminds me of Aishiteruze Baby :3), Neo Angelique (I’m a fan of the game~ hehe), Monochrome Factor (eyecandies + interesting-looking fantasy story), Special A, VK, Macross Frontier (if only for the bishie Hayaotome 8D), Itazura na Kiss, Nabari no Oh, Himitsu Top Secret. That’s a lot though, so I might find myself postponing watching some of these series till it’s finished =/
Without any biases, I’d definitely recommend Toshokan Sensou, Kurenai, Nabari no Oh, and Himitsu Top Secret. These are the ones with a solid plot and development, from what I can see. Oinari-sama piqued my interest with the bisexual of that god of harvest, like he/she really can be a male and a female xD

Haha. I thought some series would start in March, but it was just a few OVAs. I ended up finishing the list anyway, then later realized April is still a month away! xD
Most of our picks are similar, save for a couple of titles. Himitsu is in the borderline for me, the futuristic part of it reminds me of the films Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. I guess we’ll see when the 1st episode airs. =) Toshokan, Kurenai amd Nabari no Ou sound promising, and for some reason, I’m kinda looking forward to Itazura na Kiss. ^^
I know what you mean, I’ve only picked up a couple of Winter series to watch this time, so I have a bunch of series to watch in bulk soon.

Series I’m gonna check out:
Crystal Blaze – I’ve allways been a sucker for hard-boiled detective stories, so this is right up my alley
Itazura Na Kiss – Seems like the kind of love story I’ve been wanting to see ever since I finished watching Nana.
Kure-nai – Come on, he is a “specialist at settling squables” it has to be good.
The Tower of Druaga – I’ve been longing for a good old shounen action series. Maybe this can sate my needs.
And then onto things I WILL watch, even if they take awy my eyes:
Macross Frontier – It’s Macross.
RD Sennou Chousashitu – Looking to be some of the best looking anime since Seirei no Moribito. Also, I like weird stuff.
Code Geass – I cannot state enough how much I am anticipating this second season. Never in my life has a series left me waiting for more like Code Geass did. It is without doubt the third best anime I have seen in my life and I strongly recommend that you watch it til the end. Something tells me you’ll want to check out the 2:nd season once you’ve done it.

Oooh, someone who’s also wanting to check out Itazura! I’ve never seen Nana, though. But Itazura does sound good, hopefully it will deliver. I’m still not decided on Crystal Blaze since I haven’t seen any sort of preview about it animation-wise. Character design also affects my judgment somewhat! xD
Another fan of Seirei no Moribito?! I totally loved that series. It was simply awesome. Besides Production IG behind RD, it also appeals to me because the storyline seems unique. It comes across to me like Ghost Hound (currently watching) which I barely understand but seems to be drawn towards it anyway.

Hmm, seing as you seem to like the more mature/slice of life dramas you should really check out Nana. It’s the only series which have had me crying through several episodes… and I consider myself a guy who used to prefer shounen.

I usually love the things coming from Production I.G. Their animations are high class, and I find myself more and more depending on the animation quality as I watch more anime.
Since we seem to have about the same taste in anime (enjoy watching most kinds but shun harem and too silly things) I will definetly keep this as a place I visit often. And being able to see what series are coming up in the next season is pureely marvelous.
In my case, the series that had me crying was Honey and Clover I & II. It was really funny too, despite the drama. Hmm. I should probably add Nana to my “plan to watch” list. I think Seirei was the first anime I’ve seen done by Production IG and I was really impressed. I found the story and animation quality simply brilliant. I favor quality too, but if a storyline catches my attention, I wouldn’t mind too much if the animation is not Prod’n IG level.
i will check out Monochrome factor i hope it has shounen-ai in it. Also junjo romantica will be good theres not enough yaoi.

And after watching your list I think I can conduct that we probably have the same taste.

i heard that the second season of Zombie Loan is coming out next month (april) and was wondering if thats true at all? other than that i am really excited for next month! so far since the beggining of 2008 i think april will be the best month for anime. im really so im surprised that i want to see most of them.

With regard to Zombie Loan season 2, I haven’t seen it in the Spring 2008 line-up so far, so I don’t think it will be airing soon. I can’t be too sure though, but I haven’t found any official news regarding a second season either, so for now I think it’s just a rumor.
Oooh, someone who also thinks Nijuu Mensou no Musume sounds interesting! The character design looks nice and the plot seems promising. I like the mystery kind of stuff, so I put that one in my list as well. Hopefully, the series we find interesting will be able to deliver come April.
Tat sure a whole list of anime to check out !!! I should get a new bigger HDD soon ! :-p

I just finished watching code geass (I watched season 1 and 2 in a couple days) and I must say it’s probably in the top 5 best anime ever..for me anyway. I think anyone will love this anime. It has similarities to Death Note but the hero/antagonist/protagonist (he’s all of these) is a little different with his motivations and priorities.
Watch this series right now! You won’t regret it.. It’s very moving, though things go wrong a lot that you simply don’t expect…
@ misa: Thanks for the recommendation! Unfortunately, I didn’t find that series as interesting as you did. I like Lelouch’s name though, and his Geass is pretty cool. Toshokan Sensou and xxxHolic Kei were my favorites in the Spring ’08 season.
