Episode 20: “To Hunter’s Cave”
Summary: Picking up from last episode Tanda and Torogai-shi approach Shuga and company and get into a confrontation. Torogai-shi talks to Shuga and tells him what they found out about the egg eater and the guardian’s fate. Shuga tells her that they have a secret tome that might be able to contain the information they need about the egg eater, but it’ll take some time before it can be deciphered properly. Torogai informs them that no matter how large their army is they won’t be able to defeat the egg eater since it can’t be seen nor touched by humans. She tells them that Balsa is not trying to keep Chagum away from Shuga and company and that the fact of the matter is Balsa wants to protect both the prince and the egg.
After much deliberation, both parties have come to a decision. Shuga leaves Chagum in Balsa and company’s hands while he will go back to the palace and work on deciphering the tome to get more information on the egg eater and the guardian. Shuga and Torogai-shi agree that they will meet at the even day at springtime at the place of celebration with what they have deciphered and Shuga is resolved to save Chagum by then. He tells the soldiers that Balsa is formidable and they can be assured that she will indeed do her best to protect Chagum. As they walked away, Shuga thanks Tanda for his help back then (in episode 9) and says that the story that Tanda told him then is what led him here. Later on, Balsa and company say their thank you’ s and goodbye to the village as they head off to hunter’s cave where they will spend winter. Meanwhile, Shuga arrives back in the palace and asks for Master Gakai’s (Prince Sagum’s tutor) to help him in deciphering the tome. Balsa and company arrive at hunter’s cave. She comments it looks the same since the last time she was there, which was when Jiguro died.
Balsa teaches Chagum how to hunt and prepare food for winter. Torogai-shi observes that Chagum has become stronger and has kept up pretty well under Balsa’s training. Tanda agrees but says he’s worried since Chagum talks so little and doesn’t seem his usual self. Torogai-shi says that that will be something that only Chagum can resolve by himself when he begins to accept his fate as the guardian.
Balsa and Chagum are preparing something with a pestle as she notices that Chagum’s hands are raw. She takes his hand and applies some medicine as she tells Chagum that Jiguro used to apply this to her too when she was little sinde her hands were raw a lot. Chagum asks if Jiguro was the one who raised her as Balsa realizes that she’s only mentioned Jiguro in passing but haven’t really told Chagum about him. Chagum asks about Jiguro and Balsa begins to tell her story as the episode ends.
~ end of episode
My Impression: Another nice episode. Although Chagum was quiet most of the time on this one, we get to see that Balsa is training him to be a stronger person by asking him to help around with the chores, like hunting and preparing stuff that they will need over winter.
Jiguro’s name has been mentioned quite a few times in this episode, setting the stage for episode 21 which will be about Balsa. Now that next episode, I’m very much looking forward to that one!
Next episode: Balsa’s backstory! We get to meet Jiguro and learn why Balsa ended up under his care.
