Episode 17: “For Your Sake, I’ll Give My Best Blasting Through Everything” (Anata no Tameni Meippai Nagi Taoshimasu)
Summary: Nagi is checking out a manga magazine if her manga submission got accepted. Apparently, she got rejected once again with a comment from the magazine editors that she doesn’t have enough experience in life. Hayate is worried because Nagi is really quite affected by this rejection.
While cleaning Maria notices that Hayate seems bothered by something. He tells her about Nagi. Maria says this happens every few months as nagi sends them her manga creations. Hayate notes that Nagi does her best if it’s something she likes. Maria says Hayate shouldn’t worry too much and that she thinks this is a good experience for Nagi since it’s an opportunity for her to learn that there are things you cannot do anything about with money.
Meanwhile, in her room, Nagi ponders that it’s true she doesn’t have much life experience as she doesn’t have many friends and often chooses to stay home than attend school. She says she lacks poverty and realizes she knows someone with a lot of experience with poverty. She decides to ask Hayate his life experiences to compare with hers. She asks Hayate what he was doing when he was 13. Hayate replies that he was a “daiuchi ” at a mahjong house at that age. Nagi notices the great difference in their experience. Hayate says that he thinks Nagi has remarkable life experience too as she is only 13 and living in a large mansion, which not much people get to experience. Nagi asks what else Hayate did when he was 13. Apparently hayate has won an award for a manga he submitted at that age. Nagi concludes that experience in life is quite important to create a significant manga worthy of the magazine. Nagi tells Hayate that in order to gain some more life experience, she will do things she doesn’t usually do. She decides to help out Maria and Hayate as a house maid. Maria is doubtful about this plan. Nagi starts with cleaning but ends up making a huge mess by destroying stuff instead of actually cleaning them. This makes Maria angry causing Hayate to take Nagi out of the house. Nagi decides her next chore is to master shopping. Hayate takes her to the supermarket and teaches her that she has to check the price, freshness, etc. Nagi complains that it’s too complicated to do shopping and ends up buying the entire supermarket instead. She now says she has mastered shopping and proceeds to another task which is cleaning the shed. The shed turns out to be filled with Klaus-related art. They walk in on Klaus pretending to be Rodin’s “The Thinker” and says this is where he hangs out whenevr he has no screentime. Nagi says all these so-called art looks worthless and locks the shed with Klaus inside.
While walking around the grounds outside the mansion, Nagi asks Hayate what else she needs to master. Hayate notes that the last thing left is to serve guests. They suddenly run into Isumi who appears to be lost, as usual. Isumi says she was just studying at home a while ago but dropped her eraser and is looking for it and ended up in the Sanzenin grounds. Nagi says that she got lost there at a perfect time and decides to serve Isumi by making “Nagi’s original royal premium hyper giga mix blend” tea. Hayate is worried about Isumi drinking this tea creation and interevenes by saying that the cup is dirty. He then goes to the kitchen, tries Nagi’s tea which tastes horrible, and switches it with a more edible tea. Isumi says the tea is delicious. This makes Nagi proud and says that it seems she has a talent for serving guests.
Nagi decides to throw a party to show off her serving skills to more guests. She invites a bunch of guests including Hinagiku, Yukiji-sensei, Wataru and a few other classmates. This worries Hayate even more. Nagi makes a dish to serve, mixing all sorts of ingredients she can get her hands on. Hayate sneaks into the kitchen and tries the dish which tastes terrible and inedible. Hayate intervenes by making his own dish and switching it with Nagi’s. The guests are all impressed by the magnificent dish. Yuki-sensei wants more and wanders outside the banquet hall to the kitchen. Hina whispers to Hayate that the food was delicious and tells him that she knows he was the one who made it. Hayate tells her not to let Nagi know that since he doesn’t want her to be disappointed. Hina agrees to this and notes that it must be hard being a butler.
After the party, Nagi says she enjoyed serving guests and that she thinks she feels the way Hayate and Maria feels after a day’s work and says that it feels good to help out. Hayate smiles and notes that Nagi has a kind heart and he’ll protect that kind heart no matter what. Apparently, Yuki-sensei is still in the mansion wandering, looking for more of the delicious food. She finds Nagi’s dish, refills her bowl and eats it. Hayate tries to stop her but is too late. Yuki ends up exploding and disintegrating after tasting it. Nagi was looking from behind Hayate and asks why the dish she made remains untouched. Hayate denies this is Nagi’s cooking and claims it’s his own. Nagi notes that she knows it’s her cooking as she signed the pot with “made by Sanzenin Nagi.” She realizes that she wasn’t able to help Hayate and Maria from the start. Hayate says there are things that some people are good at while others aren’t.
Nagi tearfully replies that she might not have what it takes to create meaningful manga. She says that the reason she can’t win any prize is probably because she doesn’t have any talent. She runs off outside in frustration. Hayate catches up with her as she tripped over a rock. Hayate helps her up and tells her that she has talent. He notes that she kept submitting manga even if she gets rejected, she never gave up. He says that the talent nagi has is called passion. This cheers Nagi up. Hayate adds that since Nagi has too much life experience at her age, the manga she makes is probably too high level for many people to understand. Nagi says she gets it now and that she’ll try to drop the level a bit so people would understand her creations better. Nagi finishes her new manga and shows Hayate. Hayate quietly notes that it’s still too high level, as usual. Meanwhile, Isumi is enjoying the manga and says she can’t wait to know what happens next.
~ end of episode.
My Impression: There were a bunch of reference, as usual, that unfortunately I didn’t get much of it (sorry!). I just was able to identify Yahoo auctions that Hayate mentioned before they went grocery shopping.
It’s nice to see Nagi trying her best in order to achieve her dream of having her manga accepted in the magazine. It’s also nice to see Isumi again even just for a bit. She’s one of my favorite characters here. Hina knows Hayate has been covering for Nagi, it’s pretty interesting. It’s another funny episode, although not as engaging as some of the previous episodes, in my opinion.
Next episode: Hayate and the ladies will be visiting the Tropical Hakuou Land. It’s a summer swimsuit episode!
